Knowing your color season is fun. Using it to build a wardrobe where everything goes together is where it really pays off. A capsule wardrobe built on your palette means fewer clothes, less decision fatigue, and outfits that always flatter your face.
The 3-tier color formula
Every great capsule wardrobe uses three tiers of color:
- Base neutrals (about 60%): coats, trousers, shoes, bags. These come from your season's neutrals, not generic black and beige.
- Main colors (about 30%): tops, knitwear, dresses. Two or three colors from your palette that you love and that work with your neutrals.
- Accents (about 10%): scarves, jewelry, a statement piece. Your brightest or most striking palette colors, worn near your face.
Step 1: Choose your base neutrals
Pick two neutrals from your season's palette: one dark, one light. They anchor everything.
| Family | Dark neutral | Light neutral |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Warm navy, golden brown | Ivory, warm beige |
| Summer | Soft navy, blue-charcoal | Soft white, rose beige |
| Autumn | Chocolate, dark olive | Cream, camel |
| Winter | Black, true navy | Pure white, silver gray |
Step 2: Pick 2–3 main colors
Choose colors that work with both neutrals and with each other. A good test: put them side by side and see whether they look like they belong to the same story. Use the palette for your exact season:
Soft Autumn paletteThat Soft Autumn example might become: sage, terracotta and soft teal, all of which pair with chocolate and cream.
Step 3: Add 1–2 accents
Accents are your "wow" colors, the ones you get compliments in. Use them sparingly in a scarf, a lip color or a single bold top. For a True Winter, that might be fuchsia; for a True Spring, bright coral.
