The 7 face shapes

Face shapes are set by your proportions: how long your face is compared with its width, which part is widest, and how angular your jaw is. Tap a shape to learn how to recognize it.

How to tell your face shape in a mirror

  1. Pull your hair back off your face.
  2. Compare three widths: across your forehead, across your cheekbones and across your jaw.
  3. Check your length: is your face clearly longer than it is wide, or about equal?
  4. Look at your jaw: is it angular with corners, or soft and rounded?

Widest at the cheekbones with a soft jaw usually means oval or round; equal widths with a sharp jaw suggest square; a wide forehead and narrow chin point to heart. Read each face shape guide for the details.

FAQ

What face shape do I have?+

Upload a front-facing selfie above and the detector measures your face length and the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, then tells you which of the 7 face shapes you're closest to. You can also check by hand: pull your hair back, look in a mirror, and compare those widths with the shape guides below.

What are the 7 face shapes?+

Oval, round, square, heart, oblong (long), diamond and triangle. They're defined by how long your face is compared with its width, which part is widest, and whether your jaw is soft or angular.

Are face shapes and head shapes the same thing?+

Not quite. Your head shape includes the back and crown of your skull, while your face shape is the outline from hairline to chin seen from the front. Haircut and glasses advice is based on face shape, though head shape matters for very short cuts like a buzz.

How does the face shape detector work?+

An on-device model maps 478 points on your face. We measure your face length and the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, plus how angular your jaw is, then compare those proportions with the 7 face shapes.

How can I find my face shape without a photo?+

Pull your hair back and look in a mirror. Compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and whether your face is longer than it is wide. Then match those proportions with the shape guides below.

Can I have more than one face shape?+

Yes. Many faces fall between two shapes, such as oval-round or heart-diamond. That's why we show how closely you match each shape, and you can read the guides for both.

Is my photo stored?+

No. Everything runs in your browser, and your photo never leaves your device.
